What’s new (beside the year)? A new song!

Despite the Teacher’s proclamation in Ecclesiastes that life is meaningless, that is only true of those who live solely for this brief time on earth. Those who know God have a new life (last week’s post) and a new song. This song springs from the marvelous things* God has done in us and for us.

  • I know the giddy joy of forgiven sin—no guilt, no burden, no condemnation—and I sing a new song.
  • I relish the assurance I am watched over, cared for, and protected—and I sing a new song.
  • I rejoice in God-given purpose, fulness, and satisfaction—and I sing a new song.
  • I revel in the peace of a cleansed soul and a confident future—and I sing a new song.

But…

But sometimes I get caught up in the old melodies, familiar refrains of pity, worry. and fear. Sometimes I sing a dirge, forgetting who I am. Sometimes I sing the blues, focusing on the troubles of this world. Sometimes I sing the silly songs that invite me to ignore my purpose and position. Then I catch myself and with the psalmist I say, “Awake, my soul!”

I will praise you, Lord, among the nations;
I will sing of you among the peoples.

For great is your love, reaching to the heavens;
    your faithfulness reaches to the skies.
