Extreme Light

A God of Extremes #4

God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. 1 John 1:5b

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights,

with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning. James 1:17

Have you ever been where there is no variation or shadow, where all is light? I haven’t, literally or figuratively. There is always shade or a shadow, a tint or a hint of something other than light. With God, there is not. There is no variation—anywhere—in God. We’ll look at just three areas.

Truth – He is never disingenuous. He never speaks half-truths or with innuendos. He is never wrong, slanted, or unsure in His speech. Pure honesty, absolute truth, perfectly motivated by love—He cannot lie.

Perfection – No part of God’s person, judgments, or actions is marred. Nothing’s sketchy, off-base, questionable. He is light and His actions are not darkened by imperfect motives or limited understanding.

Goodness – God has no ulterior motives or selfish ambitions. None of His actions are shadowed by dark intentions or dual purposes. He acts from pure goodness and only gives good and perfect gifts.

I search my heart for such extreme light and do not find it, except… except for the light He has deposited there, the revelation of glory He’s given, the light I allow to shine. Then I see the truth that, only because He is light—extreme light—I have become a light bearer.

For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ. 2 Cor. 4:6

Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” John 8:12
