What Will You Do Better Next Year?

I saw this question posted on the lawn of a nearby temple for the Jewish New Year in September.
It wouldn’t leave me alone.
I love the realistic determination of it. Not, I resolve to lose 30 pounds. Not, I will go to the gym three times a week. Not, I will read 22 books in 2022. I will just do better. I will be mindful of improving my habits. I will be aware of strengthening weak areas. I will improve my sensitivity to others.
Is this a cop-out? I think not. It motivates me to own my weaknesses and submit them to the only Source of strength that can make a lasting difference—one that extends beyond 2022.
So I will be mindful (that’s a good word) of tentative areas in my life—those areas I’d rather think about than change. I will focus on thoughts that strengthen those places. I will speak words that motivate me and others.
I’ll record these areas in writing so I will remember to pray about them. I don’t trust my will power, but I trust the Holy Spirit’s power to help me do things better next year.
I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being. Ephesians 3:16
