Rewrite: Unending Happy Days
Have you noticed the good old days are brighter in our memory than they were in real time? As we age we learn that happy days are more than milkshakes at Arnold’s, Fonzie’s latest scheme, or a new romantic interest.
I recently organized our family pictures, a benefit of being quarantined. I slid hundreds of snapshots into albums, pictures of happy days and fond memories, but bittersweet with remembrance and an ache for youth’s innocence.
I am delighted to report that our happy days—yours and mine—are not behind us but before us. Our eternity is not marked by days of the week (Sunday, Monday Happy Days), but stretches out in front of us with unending joy. We taste it now—you know, those moments when we sense heaven’s reality, long for a pain-free world, glimpse a perfect eternity.
And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”
He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.” Rev. 21:3-5
