This is a Test

As in 1863, we have been involved in a great civil war, aiming weapons with words that can maim and kill. Each side has been self-assured and self-righteous. Instead of feeling shame we bolstered our positions and spoke hatred. Unity was upstaged by platform. Values were obscured by personalities. The echo of Abraham Lincoln’s words ask us, can the United States endure?

God sees our nation. He watches the nations of the world. He hears the pompous words and observes man’s devious plans. More than that, He sees hearts.

What does God think? Psalm 2 tells us.

The kings of the earth rise up and the rulers band together…
The One enthroned in heaven laughs; the Lord scoffs at them.
“I have installed my King on Zion, my holy hill.”

God is not worried. His kingdom is not shaken. He perceives the futility of man’s wisdom—and He laughs. He is secure in His authority and confident in His purposes.

We can also be assured of His kingship, His sovereignty, and His justice. Consider these verses:

The Lord has established his throne in heaven, and His kingdom rules over all.
Psalm 103:19

“Therefore, you kings, be wise; be warned, you rulers of the earth.
Serve the Lord with fear and celebrate his rule with trembling.”
Psalm 2:10-11

For God is the King of all the earth…
God reigns over the nations;
God is seated on His holy throne…
the kings of the earth belong to God…
Psalm 47:7-9

The election is two days behind us. We must end the civil war with our own reconstruction period, demonstrating kindness and forgiveness. Let us take the words of Ephesians 4 to heart:

Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander
be put away from you, along with all malice.
Be kind to one another, tenderhearted,
forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.

  1. Our King is Jesus. No matter who is in the White House we pray for God’s direction and guidance. The president is not the Savior only Jesus is. Pray for the chaos in our nation and allow God’s people to be an example to all who seem to be conflicted. Ask Him to rule our hearts, minds and spirit. Through what we do we will be able to touch lives for Him. Let us be united and make a DIFFERENCE for the God’s KINGDOM

  2. I appreciate your thoughts and verses, Barbara. But we all need to acknowledge the moment in history we have arrived at. The US has elected a convicted felon who was impeached and has little regard for laws and democracy. We have never had a president with this background before, and many are in despair and grieving for our country, me included. Yes, my citizenship is in heaven. Yes, I trust God. But right now, I am in despair. And if there is a civil war in this country, DT began that war with his vitriolic language. It won’t end overnight – especially with DT in the White House. This is a sad and dangerous time for our country.

    1. Weeks ago I felt the Lord directing me to the minor prophets and, though I resisted, they have brought me great comfort with their reminder that God sees all and nothing will escape His justice. He used wicked nations & rulers to bring His people back to Him and I trust Him to do the same now. I don’t pretend to understand His ways or plans but I trust His purposes and the often unorthodox methods He uses.

May He reveal what’s hidden in darkness and favor America with His light once more.
